Full name Ahmed Shehzad
Born November 23, 1991, Lahore, Punjab

Major teams Pakistan, Barisal Burners, Habib Bank Limited,Lahore Eagles, Lahore Ravi, Lahore Shalimar,Pakistan Under-19s
Playing role Opening batsman
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Legbreak
Ahmed Shehzad aims to be an aggressive batsman like Ricky Ponting, and he is well on his way if his top-order performances for Pakistan Under-19s are any indication. Shehzad made his first-class debut in January 2007, just two months after his 15th birthday, and has since established himself as an opening batsman for the U-19 team. His 167 in the same year helped Pakistan chase down a stiff 342 in the first Youth Test against England in Derby. He backed that up with impressive performances at home, scoring 315 runs – with a highest of 105 – as Australia Under-19s were thrashed 5-0. Another century followed in the Youth Test against Bangladesh, and he carried that form into the triangular tournament in Sri Lanka in 2008, which Pakistan won. He made it to the Pakistan Test squad for the home series against Sri Lanka the following year despite not being in the probables. A century in the tour game against the visitors changed his fortunes. He returned to the Under-19 circuit to represent Pakistan in the World Cup in New Zealand.

A gifted young left-handed opener who threatened at one stage to solve Pakistan’s perennial opening conundrum, Imran Farhat had a brief spell in the Pakistan side after success with the national under-19 and A sides. Farhat also evokes Saeed Anwar but only fleetingly; he bludgeons rather than times his runs. He was rather too cavalier in his early appearances in the Test arena, and was promptly discarded after the tour to New Zealand in 2000-01. However, he tightened his game and achieved much more success in the 2003-04 season. Tempering his impressive array of shots with better defensive technique, Farhat scored a deluge of runs in the home series against South Africa and New Zealand, being involved in a record four successive hundred partnerships with Yasir Hameed in the one-day internationals against New Zealand. He also notched up his first century in both Tests and ODIs during this season, and then went on to score a vital 101 in Pakistan’s victory against India in the Lahore Test. But since the India series, he has fallen away. A mediocre series at home to Sri Lanka and away to Australia saw him falter, especially with the emergence of the other left-handed opener, Salman Butt. When Pakistan included only one specialist opener in the squad for the series against England in 2005 – Butt – seemingly it confirmed that Farhat, temporarily, was out of national reckoning. But as an opener in Pakistan, you are never out of national reckoning and sure enough Farhat was back for the final Test against India, where he scored a fifty. That performance saw him on the plane to Sri Lanka and an average series. But with openers becoming as rare as dinosuars in Pakistan, he was retained for the summer tour to England, where he again produced some mixed results. Despite failures in the first two Tests, a broken finger and a spate of dropped catches, he came back to score a cavalier 91 in the final, fateful Oval Test. Runs against West Indies at home were followed by a barren patch in South Africa. A first away hundred followed by a patient half-century in the Napier Test of 2009 has set him up for a long sojourn in the Test side. His ODI career has however hit roadblocks since he was dropped after an indifferent run of scores in 2006.

Another of Pakistan’s prodigiously gifted players, but the suspicion was that Imran Nazir offers more genuine promise than most. An opener who is particularly strong off the back foot, he loves forcing through the covers. An aggressive approach has had him labelled as a one-day player, but Imran didn’t fare badly in his first few Tests.

Batting style Right-hand bat

Like many of his more illustrious countrymen, Shahzaib Hasan was only in his teens when he was fast-tracked into the Pakistan team. A robust and ungainly opening batsman, he enjoyed healthy returns in his debut first-class season, scoring 607 runs in ten matches for Karachi Blues in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In domestic one-dayers, he has scored 250 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 96.11, which saw him drafted into the squad for the 2009 World Twenty20 and he came highly recommended by Rashid Latif and Basit Ali, men with a keen eye for Karachi’s talent. He doesn’t mind a slog on either side of the wicket and hits the ball hard. Though he didn’t set the world on fire, a couple of useful mid-sized Twenty20 scores at the top of the order helped Pakistan to unexpected success. Alongside Kamran Akmal, he provided Pakistan with solid starts, never moreso than in the final against Sri Lanka.

By then, Zia had already spent four years on the domestic circuit and was with Rawalpindi at the time of selection. His T20 team, Rawalpindi Rams, made it to the final of the Faysal Bank T-20 Cup in 2011 and Awais delivered a fitting start to their chase of 181 – it ended in a 10-run defeat, but Awais smashed 32 in just 13 balls while opening the batting. That potential to make an impact at the top of the order won him his first international stint.

An opening batsman by trade, Azhar has worked his way steadily up Pakistan’s domestic scene since 2006. That was the season he began opening regularly for Khan Research Laboratories, a move that fetched him two hundreds and two fifties in five matches, and he hasn’t looked back. In four seasons since, he’s been averaging 40-plus with 11 hundreds, commendable figures in a country where opening is a modern-day curse.

There is almost no role in a cricket side that Shoaib Malik hasn’t filled, so much so that over ten years into his career, nobody is sure what his precise and best role is.
In essence, he is a batting allrounder, though he started his career as an off-break bowler. Partly the problem is that he is capable, as a batsman, of fulfilling many roles with some competence. He has had success as an opener in Tests and ODIs; he has been game-changing as a limited-overs one down and dangerous as a lower-order slogger; often he has been a stodgy middle-order bulwark. In Twenty20s, he can be brutal anywhere.

Umar Akmal burst onto the international scene oozing class, and drawing the highest praise from experts. In his first Test innings, against New Zealand in Dunedin against an attack which included Shane Bond and Daniel Vettori, the 19-year-old Umar scored 129 in an innings when no other specialist batsman touched 30. His fearlessness at the crease and his wide array of strokes had pundits gushing for superlatives, as throughout that series and on the tour to Australia which followed, Umar consistently got starts. Given that he had also scored a century in his third ODI, and that Pakistan were on the lookout for middle-order talent, it appeared Umar would be a certainty in the team in all formats for several years to come.

Of Shahid Afridi it can safely be said that cricket never has and never will see another like him. To say he is an allrounder is to say Albert Einstein was a scientist; it tells a criminally bare story.
For a start, the slant of his all-round skills only became clear ten years into his career; he is a leg-spinning allrounder. Variety is his calling and as well as a traditional leg-break, he has two googlies, a conventional offie and a lethal faster one, though this is increasingly rare. All come with the threat of considerable, late drift. He fairly hustles through overs, which in limited-over formats is a weapon in itself and the package is dangerous.

Playing role Allrounder
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm fast-medium
Abdul Razzaq was once rapid enough to open the bowling and remains composed enough to bat anywhere, though he is discovering that the lower-order suits him nicely. His bowling – the reason he was first noticed – is characterised by a galloping approach, accuracy, and reverse-swing. But it is his batting that is more likely to win matches. He boasts a prodigious array of strokes and is particularly strong driving through cover and mid-off off both front and back foot. He has two gears: block or blast. Cut off the big shots and Razzaq gets bogged down, although patience is his virtue as he demonstrated in a match-saving fifty against India in Mohali in 2005. Just prior to that he had also played a bewilderingly slow innings in Australia, scoring four runs in over two hours. When the occasion demands it though, as ODIs often do, he can still slog with the best of them: England were pillaged for a 22-ball 51 at the end of 2005. and then again for nearly 60 runs in the last three overs of an ODI in September the following year.

Tanvir has established himself as a batting allrounder and his unbeaten 124 (his second first-class century) in the Pentangular Cup 2007 match against Sind further established that point. He also represented Pakistan Academy on their tour of Bangladesh and his fine all-round performance on that tour and against Australia A in the ODI series at home prompted the selectors to name him as Shoaib Akhtar’s replacement in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20. The decision came as a surprise, however, as Tanvir was yet to take a wicket in the ten Twenty20 matches he had played.

Wahab Riaz
Full name Wahab Riaz
Born June 28, 1985, Lahore, Punjab
Current age 27 years 13 days
Major teams Pakistan, Hyderabad (Pakistan),Hyderabad Hawks, Kent, Lahore, Lahore Lions, Lahore Ravi,National Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan A, Punjab (Pakistan)
Also known as Vicky
Playing role Bowler
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Left-arm fast-medium
Wahab Riaz’s left-arm fast medium has benefited from Pakistan’s chronic poor luck with fast bowlers. With Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif missing more than they play and Umar Gul injury-prone, Riaz came into national reckoning earlier than he might have reasonably expected. His early start was promising though it came in ODIs against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh early in 2008. His first real test came against India in Bangladesh, where after 9.2 expensive overs, he was taken out of the attack for bowling two beamers. But as Pakistan misses its leading bowlers Riaz’s brisk pace remains in national contention.

The least-hyped but most successful and assured Pakistan pace product of the last few years, Umar Gul is the latest in Pakistan’s assembly-line of pace-bowling talent. He had played just nine first-class matches when called up for national duty in the wake of Pakistan’s poor 2003 World Cup. On the flat tracks of Sharjah, Gul performed admirably, maintaining excellent discipline and getting appreciable outswing with the new ball.

Current age 32 years 133 days
Major teams Pakistan, Gujranwala Cricket Association,Habib Bank Limited, Sialkot, Sialkot Stallions

Abdur Rehman made his debut for Pakistan during the ODI home series against West Indies at the ripe old age of 26 (old considering the subcontinent’s trait of ruthlessly exposing youth to the world’s best). Not a huge turner of the cricket ball, his accuracy and consistency, as well as exploiting the rough marks, does it for him not only at the domestic circuit but at the elite level as well.

Raza Hasan – not to be confused with his namesake, the world’s youngest Test debutant – made an immediate impact with his left-arm spin, taking 3 for 24 on his first-class debut to help bowl Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited to an innings victory. He was in outstanding form against Zimbabwe Under-19, taking nine wickets in the series, and earned a call-up for the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. After a good showing in the World Cup, he was picked for the A squad to play England Lions in UAE. He then had a stint in league cricket at Devon, UK, after which he was called up to the Pakistan squad for the tour of England in 2010 but didn’t get a game. He had his best returns in the 2011-12 first-class season, taking 44 wickets, and that earned another call-up to the national side, to tour Sri Lanka in 2012.
